My Grandfather and my Dad got me started in metal detecting when I was nine. My Dad had my Grandpa’s old Garrett detector from the 70’s at our house and let me use it. I would go around my parents house searching for lost treasure and still remember my first coin. A 1967 Washington quarter. After that I was hooked. I’m 32 now and have never lost my passion for metal detecting. Everytime I would find a silver coin or something of value I would always go and show my Dad and Grandpa. Each time they both would tell me the next one will be a gold coin. My Grandfather passed away in December of last year and one of the last things he asked me is if I had found that gold coin yet. Unfortunately I had to tell him no, but I would never stop searching I told him. Two days ago I was out detecting for almost 4 hours when I stopped and for the first time since he had passed, looked up and asked my Grandfather to help me out. I said “Grandpa I don’t mean to sound selfish, but let’s find that gold coin we always talked about.” The following day, yesterday, I had this weird intuition to go to an old spot I had been to multiple times. I only had an hour or so to detect and put the 6” coil on the Equinox just to see what happened. I was only out for about 7 minutes when I got a solid 18 signal on the VDI at 4 inches. Of course I was thinking maybe a bullet casing or possibly an Indian head. Much to my surprise when I flipped the dirt over I saw the glimmer of gold. “No way” I said to myself, “no possible way!” It was a 1901 $5 dollar gold piece! What happened next I can’t really remember. I can’t help but feel my Grandpa helped me out yesterday as I have been searching for a gold coin for 23 years and it feels my request had been answered. It was by far the most emotional/rewarding day in my life. I can’t thank my Grandfather and my Dad enough for keeping my passion for metal detecting alive! This was indeed “The find of a lifetime!”
