Lead Trial Piece

06 Jul 2016

Whilst on a recent club dig, I retrieved a piece of lead approx. 20mm square and 2mm thick. On closer inspection, I could make out a cross on one side. After gentle cleaning, I could make out a bust with a sword on the obverse. I sent pictures to Peter Spencer at the Searcher (see current copy) and he introduced me to Dr Martin Allen at the Fitzwilliam Museum. He has identified it as a trial piece, yet to be found coin of Stephen and very rare. So take a closer look at your lead finds.
