It's Not Just a Boy's Toy

28 Jan 2011

My partner and myself decided to have a days detecting on some pasture land. So one Sunday morning we set off to a large area that had been detected before, but only modern coins and artifacts have turned up. A Number of medieval buckles had turned up but they were deep so we knew we needed a top range detector that would give the depth needed to get to the older stuff. Detecting in iron mask and keeping the coil low and slow a few targets came up at a good depth.

Then I had a faint signal and about 10 inches down I had what looked like a hammered coin but slightly larger than one I have had before. I showed it to Tim and he said it was Saxon or Viking and would look it up when we get back. We later found out it was a penny of Eadmund 939-946 the moneyer being Aelfstan graded VF and scarce. What a day, thanks Minelab! Sue Johnston – Northamptonshire, UK
