Helping Farmers

13 Aug 2010

A couple of days ago one of my neighbours, a farmer, knocked on my door and asked if he could borrow my metal detector, as the blade had come off the silage cutter shearing off the nuts and bolts, and most of them were missing. So I gave him my old C-SCOPE K5000 VLF.TR, which is fine for finding lumps of iron. He came back about half an hour later, "no luck he said, can't find em anywhere". So I said I would come over the next day and bring the Minelab Explorer SE with 10" x 12" SEF coil, and have a look, "fine that" he said. Next morning he showed me were to look, and off he went to do his silage. About one hour later I emptied the contents of the finds bag into the back of his pick-up. Well... I've never seen anybody so happy to see a pile of sheared rusty iron nuts, washers and bolts. "I'm very impressed he said, very impressed indeed, Well done, he reached into his back pocket and offered a 10 pound note to me. No I said, I don't want anything for it, I'm just happy enough to be able to detect your land. "Don't be silly" he said, if those nuts and bolts went through the silage collector it would have caused a lot of damage, and cost me a lot of money in parts and labour to get it repaired, buy yourself some batteries" he said. He quickly shoved the 10 pound note into my overall top pocket, he then went on to tell me what could be some good spots on his land to detect. The farmer was just as happy to see that pile of nuts and bolts as I would be to see two gold sovereigns.  Alan - Scotland, UK
