Good Things Come When You Help!

22 Aug 2014

I love this hobby and I like sharing it with new people that are just getting interested in it. My neighbor has always like looking at my finds and expressed an interest in learning about detecting so I decided to help him out. I lent him one of my detectors and after making sure he knew detector etiquette and how to dig a plug properly I took him to a local park. He found a few pennies and some junk and I found a few nickels and some junk!

We decided to move to another place. On the drive over to another park he mentioned that he had called a friend that had an old house but had not heard from him so he said lets drive over to see if we can catch him at home. Just as we were pulling up the long driveway he got a call back from his friend telling us to come on over! The house was situated in a beautiful setting and was it old…well if you think 1803 is old it is! We started detecting and my second target was a heavy brass disc with a rusted center on both sides but since we did not have much time I put it in my pouch and as I did I told my friend “I think this is something good I just have that feeling”.

It was getting hot so we worked our way to the back in the shady area and under a huge tree I got a 12-41 signal but only at an inch deep. I make it a practice to dig any repeatable targets at such sites and I was glad I did as out of the ground came the most beautiful Two Cent Piece that I have ever dug a lovely 1869 with a gorgeous green patina. Shortly after we had to go because Bob had a work appointment he had to be at. When we got to my house and I washed the brass object off my eyes almost popped as I could see the words Abraham Lincoln! I knew immediately what it was as I have seen pictures of a couple others that had been dug. It is the 1860 Presidential token/medallion that had the tintype photos of Lincoln and his running mate Hannibal Hamlin inserted. Of course after being in the ground for at least a hundred years the tin types were rusted out but still I was pleased with this historic item!
