Hi, I am a member of Dewsbury Metal Detecting Club. At the weekend on a local dig I had to borrow a metal detector from a gentleman called Gordon. I haven’t got a metal detector at the moment, but I am saving my money for a Minelab E-TRAC. Quite a few members of the club have those type of machines, and from what they have told me, have had great success. The machine Gordon let me borrow was a Minelab Sovereign GT. After digging a few copper pennies and halfpennies, I got a really good signal right on a public footpath which crossed the field. To be honest I was still getting used to the various tones the machine were creating, but this in my mind was a very different tone. I dug down about 11 to 12 inches and at the bottom of the hole was some type of tool, I took it to Gordon who has been in the hobby for a lot of years, he said "where an earth did you find that" with a big grin on his face, "do you know what it is Colin". I had no idea, he said it’s a Bronze Palstave Axe Head, probably dating back to 1500 years BC, and that makes it 3500 years old. What a fantastic find on my first time out with the Minelab Sovereign GT, I feel a bit guilty about borrowing the machine off Gordon, but he said I can borrow it until I have saved enough money to purchase my own machine. Gordon also said we have a find liason officer called Amy which comes to the club every couple of months, so I will register the Bronze Axe head when she comes. Colin M Hollos - UK
