Famous 1800's Doctor's Dog collar saved and donated

30 Aug 2019

Earlier this week I returned to my favorite farm field to do some detecting, but the corn wasn't yet cut. So instead I hit the woods right next to the field. I was about to give up after finding nothing but iron signals when I get a clear repeating 20 on my EQUINOX 800. The signal was too large to be a coin which piqued my interest. I started digging and found this silver plated dog collar. Not only did it still have the dog's name, but also the owners name and address! Dr George Washington Gay (1842-1931) was born in NH and became one of the foremost surgeons of his day. I decided that I wanted to see if there was any next of kin, so I could offer it to their family. I reached out to a local museum from his town of birth, and they researched passport applications and census records to determine he unfortunately did not have any next of kin. Since there was no next of kin, I decided to offer to donate it to the museum, and they are interested in having it. To me, this is what it's all about. Saving our history for everyone to enjoy.
