Elizabeth 1st Groat found all the way in Maryland

22 Apr 2016

On 4/20/2016 I had a little time to venture out to do some detecting with my Minelab CTX 3030. This particular farm that I've been hunting for about a year now has turned up some very interesting finds, but I certainly wasn't expecting to find what I did. I geared up, and 15 feet away from my truck I hit a very choppy low-mid tone on my machine. I almost skipped thinking it was canslaw. However with it being my first signal, I felt compelled to dig it. When I pulled the clump of dirt apart I seen the indentation of the coin in the clump, looked down there it was. The most interesting thing about this coin and where it was found, in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. With that being said this Elizabeth 1st Groat were made between 1558-1603. This predates the first settlers of the town by 50-100 years, and the exploration of the Chesapeake Bay by John Smith. The coin is cut, and could had been a love token. But when/how it ended up in the location that it was found will most like remain a mystery.
