Brothers Treasure Discovery

Find of
the Month

I've been detecting for a year or so, and my brother has been interested. He recently invested in an Explorer XS same as mine, and we have been out together a quite a bit. He got us a permission on a Farm close to where he lives, so we headed out there for a look around. We arrived and had a look at the fields available, one of them was a paddock right next to the farmyard. I suggested we start there, since we knew that the Farm goes back a few hundred years at least. When we got through the gate my brother rapidly disappeared up the hedge line while I took my time investigating the area just inside the gate. After a few bits of fairly modern rubbish I got a very high pitched warble which sounded like a good coin signal, so I dug a neat flap in the turf and turned it out. Sure enough out popped a large disc - I immediately though it was too big and chunky to be a coin and thought 'Button' to myself, but when I got it in my hand and gave it a quick thumb rub, to my amazement I saw it was a large silver hammered coin! An Edward VI Shilling! I let out a cry and took it over to show my brother with a big cheesy grin on my face! "You lucky so & so" (Or something similar) was his response. I made my way back and carried on, less than a foot later, another good signal came up with another little gem of a hammered coin, and I made the journey again to show him. It turned out to be a much smaller James 1st Irish Shilling. This time I told him he had to come and find the next one, since it was his permission, and I'd be embarrassed to find everything and he found nothing. So I made off to another part of the field and left him to it for a while. A short time later a whoop told me he'd found his first hammered coin - a Charles 1st Sixpence, less than a foot or so from the others. I couldn't help noticing a huge loose sod of turf close to it and asked him what it was. "It was a good signal but I couldn't find it, you're welcome to try" was his response. Well needless to say I did, and when I removed his backfill I scanned the hole and the signal seemed close to the edge, so I got out my probe and checked the side wall. Sure enough, out popped another Charles 1st Sixpence. I had another silly grin, my brother looked a little sick. Well the four coins have now made a journey to the British Museum, who have said they are almost certainly a purse loss dropped together at the same time and therefore constitute treasure! We're very pleased with our treasure found with the Minelabs and hope to get it back soon. In the mean time we're out looking for more. Steve Bush - United Kingdom
