I had barely gotten out of the car park on this particular day. I stepped out from beside the car and turned on my detector over an area of ground that was washed out from a recent storm. I was so surprised to find this ring only an inch below the surface. I took it to a local jeweller who says it is an old style of brass casting, and that he thinks it is significantly old. I then took it to an antique dealer who told me she thought it was worth taking it to the State Museum for appraisal and made it very clear I should not let it out of my site. I have not yet organized an appraisal, however, it surprised me that two specialists were excited by my find; I thought for sure that they would say it was costume jewellery.
