With a break in the cold weather here in Colorado, I pulled out my E-TRAC for a little bit and play with it in my back yard of my house that was built in the late 1800s. First signal I get is near an old cedar fence post, it was an "iffy" signal, but figured why not dig it up and see. So, I dig up around the post and pull out an old mason jar lid, the kind that has the glass inside the lid.
I start to cover my hole, and thought I should check the hole again as it could've been part of a cache. I didn’t find any coins, but got a different signal this time... so I dig a little deeper and have a good size pile of dirt next to the hole, and the signal disappears. I am assuming that it had to be a nail or something of that nature so I start to fill the hole back in and realized I didn’t sweep over my dirt pile (I always double check hole and pile before filling) but I didn’t do it right away this time for some reason, but I am glad I did as I found what my signal was, it was a 1860s Connecticut National Guard buckle!
At first I had no idea what it was, I knew that it looked a lot like a civil war buckle that I have seen on TV, but never would have thought I would ever find something like that here in Colorado. But low and behold it was from that era, and was military. Finding this has taught me new things to add to my history knowledge as I never heard of Connecticut national guard, and has brought great interest for my kid to learn more about it as well.
