A wet day in Dorset

06 Dec 2020

A cold wet December morning saw six members (covid rules) of the Stour Valley club detecting a pasture field in Dorset. Two hours into the hunt and the rain hadn't eased up, everyone and everything was covered in mud, and the cold was setting in. By mid morning our numbers were dwindling until only two of us were left, finds were few, but we concentrated on the far end of the field as on a previous occasion a couple of Roman sestertius had turned up in one corner. About thirty meters away I had a good signal from the Equinox which resulted in a nice but worn sestertius of Antoninus Pius 138-161 AD. After showing my detecting partner, who had just retrieved a sword belt hanger and a bronze ring, I returned to my detector and carried on where I had left off. After finding a Vicky shilling, I got a ID of 17 on the Equinox resulting in this wonderful Iron age bow brooch dating to 450-300 BC. Hope you like it as much as I do.
