A Silver Day

04 Apr 2018

My son and I went to a location that I had been once before with no luck. We knew the location of an old log cabin that had been gone for years but this time we decided to try the field next to the old cabin site, which proved to be a good decision. About 30 minutes into the hunt, I received a solid 01-48 signal at 6 inches. I had never dug this kind of signal before but it sounded too good to pass. I pulled a plug 5 inches down and then took one hand full of dirt and there was a shiny edge of what looked like a coin. I immediately called my son over to have him wave his metal detector over the hole to see what number he came up. He immediately looked at me and said, “It’s reading a dollar”. I then had him remove it from the ground and to my surprise; he was holding a shiny 1881 silver dollar. This was the first silver dollar I had found in 25 years. After a few pictures, we went back to detecting. About 20 feet away I received another solid 11-47 signal at 2 inches. I popped the plug and immediately could see the shiny edge of another coin. I again called my son over and we removed the 1889 half-dollar from the ground. This was the best day I have ever had finding silver with the Minelab E-TRAC.
