A Nickel Grand Slam

19 Apr 2011

I got permission to search a college campus in Pennsylvania founded in 1790. This was my second time searching the main campus. Last hunt produced an 1809 Half Cent along with a lot of Indian Heads. I started the hunt today with a nickel reading which produced 3 V nickels; 1901, 1903, and 1907. A few feet away some more nickel readings produces 2 Shield Nickels dated 1867 w/o rays. Found a couple of Jefferson Nickels as well. I wanted to find a Buffalo Nickel now to make it a “Grand Slam” on the nickels; finding all the type of nickels made. I was digging up Indian Head pennies as well. Then I unearthed an 1847 Large Penny. So now I had almost a Grand Slam on pennies as well. I just needed a Flying Eagle Cent to find all the penny types. Moved to another section of the main campus and found more Indian Heads and another Large Cent, 1830. I was not finding any old silver yet and still yearning for the Buffalo and Flying Eagle. Got a silver “twang” and dug in and found an 1891 Seated Liberty Dime. Got another silver reading hoping was a quarter but it ended up being an old cufflink I believe. It was getting late and I still wanted the Slams. I was digging all Nickel reading and finding my share of pull tabs. Finally got a good nickel reading dug in and there she was; a 1913 Buffalo!! Time to go even though a Flying Eagle would have made a great day I am not complaining. Total finds just today on this campus was:

1891 Seated Dime 1867(2) Shield Nickels 1901 1903 1907 V Nickels 1913 Buffalo 1820 and 1847 Large Pennies 1881 1883 1888 1889 1891 1893 1898 1906 Indian Heads 1910 1912 1913 1917(2) 1918 1919 1920 1945 1945d Wheat’s 3 Quarters 5 Dimes 4 Jefferson’s 23 Memorials
