Last Sunday I was out on a nearby field. I’ve searched this farm for half a year now. The finds up until now have been newer coins (1890-1950), pieces of old farming equipment and a couple of jewellery items. Less than a week ago, I found a nice US dime from 1903. Not a common find in the fields I visit.
Well, I started swinging at a triangular part of the field, enclosed by two stone fences and a newer metal wired fence. As I approached the metal fence, I had to turn as it confused the detector. But, close to the fence there was a slight variation in the sound, not just the crisp sound of the fence. I worked the signal a little and decided to dig it.
I saw right away that it was a silver coin, but not what kind. As I picked it up I recognized “The Wig”. The coin was an 8 skilling from 1701. This is a Danish/Norwegian coin which portraits King Frederik IV (1671-1730). He wore a rather big wig, which gave this coin it’s nick name The Wig. Thanks to my detector and the 15” coil, I could unearth this crisp coin after maybe 300 years.
