A little piece of history

09 Jun 2021

On the 29th May I headed out for an early morning detecting session at a nearby permission in the Isle of Man. The field I decided to detect was quite swampy in places but was firm enough to walk on. After an hour of detecting I had a good solid hit which was a constant 18 on the VDI. After digging down three or four inches I picked out this thin circular piece of tarnished silver, I could barely make out the markings on the sides of the coin but knew it was something special. When I returned home I gently washed it in soap and water and was amazed to find I was holding a King Edward I silver long cross medieval penny, circa 1272-1307. To be able to find and save from the earth a coin of such age is a fantastic feeling
