A brother's memory

14 Sep 2012

They tore down a really old house just around the corner from me. I stopped by and talked to the former owner of the Lot. He lives 2 houses down and has to move because the whole block was sold. He was a very talkative Gentleman in his 80’s.

He told me a story of his Great grandfather being wounded at Shiloh. The wounded soldier took coins from the dead to pay his way home. The coins are suppose to be in a box and buried on the lot. How many of those stories have you heard? Hey he thinks it is true.

So I go back today for a short hunt. Just a few minutes in I get a really nice Silver beep! I like silver beeps.. I dug up this WWII Sharpshooters Medal.

The older story telling gentleman was out in his yard. I carried the Medal down for him to look at. He says “That’s my Uncle's, he won it at the Battle of the Budge”.

He says “can I take it in the house and clean it?” His wife comes out and asked if he can have it, he follows with tears in his eyes saying that his mother was 99 years old and she did not have anything of her brothers.

So being the big softy that I am.. and trying to do the right thing, I gave him the medal, my name and address and told him that only him or his mother were to have the find.

He agrees to call when his mother passes and return the treasure to me. I have never felt so good and so bad at the same time! Cool Medal anyway. Thanks to my trusty X-TERRA 70.
