Find of
the Month

On a recent trip to a spot in the Pilbara, I was following a creek near where I had found some small nuggets the year before. I remember the day was hot and sunny with no wind and a billion flies, anyway I saw a small gully coming down the slope and decided to have a quick look. I wasn't expecting to find anything on account of all the quad bike tracks around but what the heck, as soon as I started up the gully, to my surprise a booming signal. Iron I thought to myself, I started to dig the target and after removing about 6 inches of soil I again checked the hole, yep still in there, my hopes started to run wild, another 6 inches and still in the hole. No more mucking around I swung the pick hard, removed another foot of dirt and checked the hole, its out! I swung the coil over the mullock and the signal was really loud, similar to a tin can when I looked down I could see a glint of gold in the dirt. You bloody beauty I shouted and reaching down and grabbing the nugget I felt the weight, had to be a few ounces. I walked up the small gully just to listen for more targets, and as I walked I could hear many targets. So I decided to only dig up the booming signals and head back to camp for a bit to eat. 2 hours of digging the hardest ground I ended up with six nice big nuggets, 219 grams or just over 7 ounces! I stayed at that spot for around 2 weeks and found just under 1 kilo of gold.
