60 years later

10 Nov 2016

I recently received permission to hunt a property that dates back over 200 years. On the first day, my son and I dug 7 Wheat Pennies and 1 Large Cent Liberty with Cap ( 1700's ). Before my dad and I started digging on the second day we were having a conversation with the property owner and he stated that his wife, (who had passed away several years ago), had lost her gold graduation ring somewhere in the back yard 60 years ago and has never been found since. He also said that there have been several different people come to his house over the years with metal detectors to look for the ring but were unable to find it. We knew then that we needed to start detecting the backyard to see if we could return to the owner this small piece of memory of his wife. After about 30 minutes of searching, we had only dug a 1916 Wheat Penny and 1887 Indian Head Penny, when all of the sudden my E-TRAC gave a screaming 15-30 signal. As I dug into the ground, I caught a glimmer of gold at 6" deep. I stopped for just a moment because I knew I was about to give back to the owner a small piece of memory that was lost so many years ago. I called my dad over and we both looked at the ring until we found the initials "MJH" on the inside of the ring. Knowing this was his wife's initials I walked over to the owner and had him open his hand. I laid the ring in his hand and he looked at me with disbelief and amazement. He said "I don't believe it, do you know how many people have looked for this ring. It has been gone for 60 years". He put the ring on his little finger and only looked away from the ring long enough to tell me "Thank you". The last thing he said to us before we left was, "He only wished she was here so he could give it back to her".

Recovering history after 60 years was easy with the E-TRAC, thanks to Minelab.
