I was metal detecting near an old gold mine in northern California, when I came across a questionable Target, it read 25 but it wasn't very stable. I had been digging square nails all day, but I decided to dig this target. After about 8 in I pulled out a giant Rusty bolt. As I push the dirt back in the hole a gold reeded edge flashed in the dirt. As metal detectorists you learn early on not to get your hopes up. So I tried to keep my composure as I pulled the object from the dirt. I couldn't help myself my heart was racing as I carefully remove the dirt from the coin. To reveal an 1873 s $20 gold piece. It's hard to describe the feeling of finding something like that in the ground. I also had the feeling that there could be more. About 5 feet away I found another one this time the target was stable as a rock 25. And out popped in 1874 s $20 gold piece. I set it aside and kept swinging. And you wouldn't believe it if you weren't there but sure enough out came another one 1870 s $20 gold piece. By this time it was dark, so I staggered back to my truck and went home. I did some research on the mind when I got home and found that there had been a robbery in 1906. I'm thinking the robbers must have dropped these coins during their getaway.
