1879 S Morgan Dollar from Fort Sherman Coeur d'Alene, ID

05 Dec 2020

While hunting the water off the Old Fort Sherman in Coeur d'Alene, I received a faint 38-39 signal on the Equinox 800. These are usually deep Iron signals, but this one repeated in all directions. As I dug the scoop deeper the signal became crisper and louder. About four scoops down the signal was in the scoop. Shaking the scoop, a large black coin appeared. Fort Sherman was a Western outpost fort envisioned by General Sherman in 1877. The fort began operations in 1878. This Silver Dollar was likely dropped close to the 1879 date on the coin. There were few people living out here at the time and was likely dropped by one of the inhabitants of the fort. At the time the lake was at a much lower level than it is now. This is my first Silver Dollar, and what a great piece of history. This section of water has been hunted since the 80s and before, but the Equinox pulled it out of the iron infested mud like it was by itself.
