1863 Civil War Token

10 Feb 2016

I've owned my CTX 3030 for about a month and within the first weeks of using it was finding some nice targets at locations I've hit previously with other detectors so when the large snow storm hit the region a few weeks back I couldn't wait for it to melt to get back out. Well that chance came Sunday afternoon 2/7/16.

I started out hitting an old park in the area and pulled out a nice Mercury dime and a bit of clad. This put me at 7 silver FTY only one shy of my last year total without a CTX. I decided to head to another spot I've found several 1800s coins especially Indian head pennies.

As I arrived I was speaking with a detecting friend on the phone and told him I was going to pull an 1800s Indian out and a seated coin. Well I started detecting and within minutes pulled out a beautiful 1892 Indian head sent a text to my friend to let him know one goal down. Few minutes later another Indian this one an 1888 in rough shape. Well I continued on not finding many targets since I've hit this site hard but then a nice high tone comes in showing 10" deep. I'm convinced this is my seated. Well I pull it out an find what I think is Indian number 3 but I see the 1863 date and then a flag above it. Then I realize I have something special a Civil War Token. Not my seated but I'm thinking something special and it's a great substitute for it. I pack it in soon after because I can't read the entire wording an I want to know. I get home and start cleaning it up and then can read "The Flag Of Our Union" then flip it over see "DIX" in the center but notice writing around the sides. I clean it more and make out " If Anybody Attempts To Tear It Down Shoot Him On The Spot"

At this point I'm thinking Wow that had to be some harsh times for our country to be having tokens such as this floating around if that was the mindset. It's hard to believe how far we've come in such a short time. Thanks for reading hope you enjoy the photos and can appreciate this token as much as I do. Gene Walter - Pennsylivania, USA
