1846 Charleston Servant Tag

26 Jun 2019

My digging buddies and I received a rare permission on a property that we had been trying to obtain for a long time due to its history. The property owner finally said go for it but just make sure that you fill in your holes and take all of the trash you find out with you. Yessir!!!! I honestly cannot tell you what I found the rest of the day after my first target.... Maybe a few flat buttons, a couple of buckles or three ringers.... I have no idea because my first alert rang in at 26-27 on the Equinox 800 and was deep. Dug the first plug out (about 6-7 inches) and it was still in the hole and still a solid 26. I'm thinking it'll be a silver coin. I dug out the side of the hole, so I wouldn't scratch the coin and I look down and there's a greenish square with a hole in the top..... There's no way. I brush the sandy soil off of it and I can see numbers and letters..... There's no way. A little lighter rubbing with my thumb and I could make out the date of 1846, Charleston, 971 and Servant...…. There's no way. I had actually found a Charleston Slave Tag. This was a day that I will never forget and the history that I was holding in my hand at that moment was such a monumental feeling...…. that I need to go back and ask if I can hunt there again.
