So after about three hours of doing some investigating/detecting of a new field permission and finding nothing but allot of exercise. I decided to meet up with a detecting partner, to try another field where we had looked for arrowheads the prior year and noticed allot of glass and pottery way out in the field by a spring..... After scouring the field for a bit where we were hoping to have some luck I worked my way back to where we parked our vehicles near the road. My thoughts were "at least there will be some signals to dig", like maybe someone dropped some change getting out of their car or tractor, lol. So I wanted the field edge along the road, lots of pull tabs and can slaw. Got a really solid 18 VDI on my Equinox 800 about 25 feet from our vehicles. Popped the plug and literary out falls a quarter sized gold coloured coin. Maintaining my composure I carefully picked up the coin and immediately noticed it had some weight to it and that was the moment knew what I had! I called over Ryan and showed him and asked him to help detect the surrounding area from my target hoping for another one to pop out but the whole area seemed to be nothing but garbage here and there. Once I got back home and was able to safely examine the coin and see that it was in-fact an 1845 Half Eagle $5 Gold Coin. I only cleaned it off with some bottled and before putting it into a flip noticed a little area on the rim of the coin that looked like mud but would not come off. That was when I realized it was the remnants of where a small loop was attached for it to be worn as a necklace charm! Also would explain why there were no other artefacts / coins to be found anywhere else at that location. Seamed to be someone’s unfortunate random drop. Man o man Ill bet someone looked for this for a long time, long before metal detectors were invented!
