Minelab

1 Mill (Well, not really)

19 Jun 2023

While metal detecting around some bushes, I unearthed this 1 mill sales tax token while using my Minelab Equinox 800 with the six-inch coil. It was roughly 8-9 inches deep next to a nail. It bounced between 27-29. The token is very small at 16mm. On the obverse, the tax token reads ARIZONA STATE DITAT DEUS ( meaning "God Enriches") TAX COMMISSION. On the reverse, TO MAKE CHANGE FOR 1 CORRECT SALES TAX PAYMENT. These copper tokens were produced from 1937-40. Sales tax tokens were fractional cent devices used to pay sales tax on very small purchases in many American states during the years of the Great Depression. Tax tokens were created as a means for consumers to avoid being “overcharged” by having to pay a full penny tax on purchases of five or ten cents. Issued by private firms and municipalities, sales tax tokens were generally issued in multiples of 1 mill or one-tenth of a cent.
