"It has to be a reproduction"

03 Feb 2023

I was on a permission in Connecticut, exploring a historic property once owned by a Revolutionary War General. The front lot was rumored to be the site of his battle drills, and in the 1800s, it had been a bustling pub. I was fairly surgical with my Nox and confident that'd we'd uncover something worthwhile. But as I detected the property, all I found were mundane modern trash, brass scrap and the occasional square nail. The sweltering summer heat didn't deter me, and I pressed on.. Then, I hit a solid signal, the same solid signal I had gotten 6 inches away (which was a bottle cap). Determined to dig everything I reluctantly popped out the plug expect to see another bottle cap staring back at me. But to my surprise, there at the bottom on the hole, was a two-piece button, face down. I could just barely make out part of a back-mark, "Buckley". Upon flipping it over, my eyes widened in disbelief. It was a CSA button. Overjoyed, and in disbelief I shouted "It has to be a reproduction!". I quickly showed my fellow detectorist and the property owners. But to my surprise, they were unimpressed and simply said "Cool, it's yours. Enjoy." I couldn't believe my luck, but after having some experts look at it, they affirmed it was the real deal. I had found a Confederate relic in Connecticut. After doing some research and speaking with some local historians, it seems it must have been battlefield souvenir lost by a patron of the pub. We scoured the property many times after that and not one other notable relic was recovered. But the thrill of the hunt had paid off, and I was elated to uncover a piece of history.
