Minelab and James Madison's Montpelier Estate are offering a scholarship program for participants to submit entries to earn the opportunity to work side by side with the archaeology team at James Madison Montpelier.
James Madison's Montpelier Estate has been hosting public metal detector programs since 2012 to engage metal detectorists with the goals and values of archaeological research and preservation.
In 2014, we would like to move these programs to the next step. The willingness metal detectorists have shown in working with archaeologists brings about the opportunity to put them in contact with various archaeological groups around the country where their skills in locating and defining sites can be utilized. The expertise of skilled metal detectorists fits the needs of many archaeological research projects on historic sites. Through this process, we can get a better idea of how individuals can fit the needs of archaeological research groups interested in working with participants.
The selected candidate will have the tuition costs waived to attend one of the Montpelier programs and will include lodging on the Madison property in the Arlington House. Qualifying candidate will be responsible for their own transportation.
